One of my favorite foods are different, unique, and healthy versions of “chips and dip,” like this healthy edamame guacamole with no avocado! I was inspired to try making a recipe for guacamole with edamame by True Food Kitchen, but developed my own recipe.
This avocado-free guacamole is zesty, savory, and really delicious! Grab those tortilla chips and raw vegetables and dip away!
I’m a huge fan of guacamole (I could eat a Frontera bowl of it every night!) and I love creating healthy delicious dips that the whole family will enjoy like my smoky onion and kale dip, and 7 layer taco dip!
This edamame guacamole is a healthier version of traditional guacamole, made with edamame that gives it that gorgeous green color, but with less fat, fewer calories, and tons more protein! It’s a delicious vegetarian Mexican recipe!
You might have tried edamame in their shell at Japanese restaurants, but this new way to use edamame is really delicious and couldn’t be easier!
And if you can’t have avocado due to an allergy and have been searching for an avocado alternative for guacamole, you’ll love this edamame guac.
Some people will balk at my use of the word guacamole, but this edamame guac is truly delicious and tastes very similar to traditional avocado guacamole. Give the recipe a try and you’ll see what I mean!
🌱 What Is Edamame Guacamole?
Edamame guacamole (or edamole) is made using edamame instead of (or in addition to) ripe avocados, with the addition of dairy-free plain yogurt to create a creamy texture. Traditional fresh ingredients are added as well, such as cilantro, lime juice, and garlic!
Edamame is a great avocado substitute for guacamole, and really makes this recipe the best Mexican guacamole recipe you’ll ever have. As an added bonus, my version has half the calories and three times the protein as regular guac!

- Quick And Easy: All you have to do is blend all the ingredients together in your blender and food processor and you have yourself a tasty, creamy guacamole alternative.
- Won’t Brown: Unlike traditional guacamole, this edamame guac isn’t going to turn brown after being left out or refrigerated! You also don’t have to wrestle with ripe avocados that are only ripe for like, a second before going bad.
- Protein Packed And Lower In Fat: This edamame guacamole recipe has 6 g of protein per serving, higher in dietary fiber, and is much lower in total fat than regular guacamole. It still has some healthy fats though, making it a great healthy snack for kids.
- Recipe Is Easily Doubled Or Tripled: And in fact, it’s a great idea to double or triple this vegan guacamole recipe with edamame if you’re serving it at a party. This dip is so delicious it might disappear right before your eyes!

🥘 Ingredients
Shop your fridge/freezer and pantry; you might already have the ingredients for this protein guacamole! See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for nutritional information and more detailed instructions on how to make guacamole without avocado!
- Shelled Edamame: You’ll need 2 cups of shelled edamame beans. I buy them in the frozen section and allow them to defrost overnight. If you forgot to defrost them, just stick them in the microwave for a short time until they thaw.
- Dairy-Free Plain Yogurt: This provides added protein, creaminess, and with less fat and calories.
- Fresh Garlic And Red Onion: For tons of authentic flavor, add fresh minced garlic (I used 3 cloves garlic, but you can adjust it to your preference), and a chopped raw onion. Either a small red onion or a small white onion would work.
- Cilantro And Jalapeño: Fresh cilantro gives this dip a nice fresh flavor while the fresh jalapeño gives it a kick!
- Fresh Lime Juice: Adds a touch of acidity. I used the juice of a whole lime (about 2 tablespoons for a small lime), but use as much or as little as you like.
- Spices: Sea salt (I used a half tsp sea salt, but feel free to adjust), black pepper, green onion, and olive oil.
- Optional Add-ins: To make this a chunky vegan guacamole, add in some diced roma tomatoes and a whole avocado diced in medium-sized cubes!
🍲 Ingredient Substitutions
- Shelled Edamame: You’ll need 2 cups of edamame soy beans. I buy them in the frozen section and allow them to defrost overnight.
- Dairy-Free Plain Yogurt: You can also use vegan sour cream if you don’t have yogurt. Homemade option: blend a cup of raw cashews with some water (or use silken tofu and no water) with a splash of lemon juice and salt!
- Fresh Garlic And Red Onion: If you don’t have them, use a tablespoon of onion powder and a teaspoon of garlic powder.
- Cilantro And Jalapeño: If you don’t like the way cilantro tastes, you can always substitute in fresh parsley or green onions or leave it out.
- Fresh Lime Juice: You can also use lemon juice!
- Spices: You can swap the oil for another like sesame oil if you want a different flavor profile. Feel free to use whatever spices you enjoy like chipotle pepper powder or red pepper flakes!
- Optional Add-ins: Whatever other add-ins you like! Chopped nuts, vegan shredded cheese, other veggies, corn, etc. You could reserve some of the onion (chopped in small pieces) to stir in,which would add some texture. You could also add in some of the whole edamame beans for texture.
🔪 How To Make Edamame Guacamole
This healthy edamame dip recipe comes together with simple steps and minimal effort! Here is how to make this delicious alternative to guacamole:
Add Everything But The Edamame: Add yogurt, lime juice, garlic, red onion, cilantro, jalapeño, green onions, kosher salt, black, pepper and olive oil to the food processor. Process to combine.
Add Edamame: Add remaining ingredients (edamame beans) and process into a paste, stopping to scrape down the sides as necessary. This should take less than a minute.
Taste And Adjust Seasonings: Add more salt and pepper if needed, to taste.
Serve: Top with a drizzle of olive oil if desired and serve immediately. Alternatively, refrigerate it to chill it a bit more before serving.

- Fresh Ingredients: Use the freshest ingredients you can for the best results and best flavor.

- Edamame Guacamole For Kids: Your kids will devour this vegan edamame dip with whole grain chips! It’s a perfectly creamy kid friendly snack! Kids who love chips and dip will go crazy for this healthy version. If your kids don’t like spicy foods, I recommend leaving out the jalapeño.
📖 Variations
- Edamame Hummus: If you want to make this vegan dip more like a traditional hummus recipe but with edamame instead of chickpeas, add a little tahini and ground cumin or smoked paprika!
- Add More Heat: If you want to turn this into a spicy edamame guacamole recipe, you can use a little bit of cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or diced serrano peppers for a kick! Spicy guacamole is great for adults, but not so much for kids unless you know your kids like spicy food!
- Add Avocado: To make this more like a classic guacamole recipe, feel free to add ½ an avocado to the food processor at the same time you add the edamame.
- Change Up The Spices: If you don’t like spicy, leave out the jalapeño. If you’re looking for added flavor consider adding cumin, smoked paprika for a smoky flavor, or chili powder for a richer spice.
- Oil-Free: You can use unsweetened non-dairy milk or water instead of olive oil. Use just enough water to get the food processor going.
- Silky Smooth: Prefer a super silky and creamy texture to your edamame guacamole? Try boiling the edamame for 5-10 minutes, then plunging it in an ice bath (a large bowl filled with ice water) to stop the cooking process. The longer you boil the edamame, the softer they will be.
🍽 Serving Suggestions
Serve this low fat guacamole as an appetizer or snack! While chips are a classic pairing, there are so many other things you can eat with guacamole besides chips! Here are a few of my favorite ways to serve this vegan dip:
- Your Favorite Chips: Tortilla chips, pita chips, whole grain chips, or lower fat potato chips would all be delicious dipped in this guacamole recipe with edamame.
- Whole Grain Crackers Or Rice Cakes: Spread this avocado-less guacamole on whole grain crackers or brown rice cakes for a wholesome snack! For an extra boost of protein and healthy fats, sprinkle on some hemp seeds.
- Raw Vegetables Cut Into Sticks: Celery, carrots, cucumber, bell peppers, daikon radish, large broccoli florets, and large cauliflower florets (plus some grape or cherry tomatoes) would be great to serve with this non avocado guacamole.
- With Sweet Potato Fries: This flavorful dip would be fantastic with air fried sweet potato fries (or substitute regular potatoes).
- Sandwich Spread: This guac without avocado makes a fantastic spread for veggie sandwiches (in place of mayo). It would be especially great with this vegan chicken sandwich or on a burger like my high protein veggie burgers.
- Delicious On Tacos: Just because this is a guacamole without avocado, that doesn’t mean we can’t put it on tacos, right? Try it on top of sweet potato tacos, crispy potato tacos, or vegan black bean tacos.
- Toast: We all love avocado toast, so how about using this edamame spread on whole grain bread? It’s a high protein, simple breakfast you can enjoy any day of the week!

Vegetarian Option: If you’d prefer to use dairy ingredients, try this recipe with some plain Greek yogurt or low fat sour cream.

Here is how to store and keep this edamame guacamole:
- Refrigerating: Store leftovers of this vegan guacamole recipe with edamame in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Use within 1-2 days for best results. If you choose to add avocado flesh to this simple guacamole recipe, then place plastic wrap on the surface of the guacamole before storing it—this will prevent browning.
- Make Ahead: This chunky guacamole dip tastes best enjoyed fresh! But you can make it a couple of hours in advance without a problem, or worrying about it browning.

Yes you can! My simple and wholesome guacamole recipe without avocado is made with edamame instead. It’s still a beautiful green color, but it’s loaded with protein and delicious fresh flavor. Just whiz it up in the food processor or blender!
If your guacamole tastes bland, I recommend adding a bit more salt and pepper to taste. You can also add some garlic powder, garlic salt, additional lime juice, and a generous amount of fresh cilantro for more flavor.
Avocados brown quickly, but edamame does not! This allows you to make the guacamole ahead without worrying about it browning too quickly. Be sure to add a generous amount of lime juice to keep it fresh!

Edamame Guacamole
Ingredients

Hi Neera! Any other bean won’t make this recipe look like guacamole — so for example, you could try this with white beans or garbanzo beans — but it’ll look more like hummus (and may even remind you more of hummus) than guacamole! Hope that helps!
