Bell Pepper: We used a green bell pepper for this recipe, but feel free to use any color! You could even use a variety of colors (red peppers, yellow and orange) to make this pizza super colorful and more gourmet. Any and all crunchy vegetables give this vegetarian pizza recipe great texture and flavor. Use your favorite vegetables to customize this pizza to your personal preference!

Onion: We used fresh red onion slices for this classic veggie pizza recipe. The perfect companion for green pepper! You can also use green onions if you like!

Tomatoes: Fresh Roma tomatoes were used for this pizza, but you can use any type of fresh tomato. Diced tomatoes or cherry tomatoes would be great here.

Cheese: Freshly grated Parmesan cheese is preferred for its robust and yummy flavors. But you can use any cheese you like! Mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, or an Italian cheese blend would all work well.

Pizza Sauce: Make sure there is no sugar added in the pizza sauce. You can also easily make your own sauce.

Pizza Dough: We used whole-wheat pizza dough, but any store-bought pizza dough will work. You can also use this vegan flatbread for your pizza dough and make naan bread pizza, or make your own healthy pizza dough, too.

Seasoning: A variety of dried oregano, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes or black pepper is needed for this pizza recipe. The best flavors!

Step by Step Instructions

Prepare Vegetables and Dough: First, preheat the oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, prepare the vegetables and spread the pizza dough out on a flat surface. For a more caramelized pizza crust, brush the dough with olive oil.

Recipe FAQs

Will kids enjoy this colorful veggie pizza?

Absolutely! In fact, this is a great way to get picky eaters to eat their veggies!! If you have super picky eaters, you can blend the veggies into the pizza sauce and use that to top your pizza – they will have no idea they’re actually eating veggies! Or for younger kids, you can dice up the veggies really small before topping your pizza, and even cut the pizza into finger food cubes so it’s easy for little ones to pick up and eat. You can even divide up the dough into smaller portions so that each kid can make their own veggie pizza and pick out their own toppings – that’s always a hit with kids!

What vegetables go well on a pizza?

All types of vegetables are good for pizza. You can stick to this green pepper and onion pizza with tomatoes, or you could even add summer vegetables like zucchini, squash, fresh herbs, etc. The options are limitless!

How do you make veggie pizza not soggy?

Be careful not to use too much pizza sauce! Other tips: Make sure the pizza dough is stretched thinly enough to avoid moisture getting trapped inside the dough, and make sure the oven is fully preheated prior to baking.

Do you cook veggies before putting on a pizza?

You do not have to cook the vegetables before putting on a pizza. Once you place the pizza in the oven to cook, the veggies will naturally roast in the oven. If you cook them beforehand, the vegetables may get a little overcooked.

How do I store the leftovers?

Simply transfer the leftover pizza to an airtight container and place in the refrigerator for up to four days. You can also freeze the pizza. To freeze: slice your pizza then wrap each slice in foil and place in a freezer safe airtight container. Freeze for up to 3 months. To reheat, place the pizza in the oven at 350 degrees until warmed through.

Variations and Substitutions

Make This Pizza Gluten-Free: To make this pizza gluten-free, simply use a gluten-free pizza dough!

Vegan Option: Make sure to use a dairy-free cheese if you are vegan. There are several options available in the grocery store or even online!

Mix It Up: Want to mix the vegetables up? Go for it and use your favorite fresh veggies! Spinach, kale, carrots, fresh broccoli, corn, or even other types of tomatoes will work well in this easy veggie pizza recipe.

  2. Love making pizzas with the kids, my daughter and I went with this recipe to share for a nice veggie option!5 stars

  3. Hi Anjali,
I want to try this recipe with mushrooms and spinach. Do you think I need to saute the veggies before adding them to the pizza?
    Looks delicious!

    • Hi Allison! It’s totally up to you! If you like the taste of sautéed veggies on pizza, then you could totally saute them with garlic and/or spices before topping the pizza. But they would do just fine if you added them raw and then baked them with the pizza in the oven. Hope that helps!

  4. Thanks for the recipe. We got tired of spinach pizza so I decided to try something new tonight. I make my own dough and sauce (wife’s recipes) which the kiddos like.

    • Oh great! I’m so glad you liked this – and I love that you make your own pizza sauce and dough from scratch!

  5. hi Anjali—so lucky to have stumbled upon your blog (via @Ginas site)
I’m in India and as you must be aware there is no traders Joe.
I would appreciate if you would please share a pizza topping recipe and if I need to bake the base at home, how do I do that?
    Thanks!

  6. This pizza looks great! Don’t have a Trader Joe’s anywhere near where I live to get fresh whole wheat pizza dough. Anything similar at Walmart which is our grocery store? Do they have this type of dough at a Wegman’s?

    • I think Walmart has frozen whole wheat pizza dough – look for pizza buddy in the frozen section. Hope that helps! 🙂

  7. Must be a guy thing! My husband could live on pizza too! This looks so much better than frozen pizza!

  8. Haha that is too funny! My boyfriend is the SAME way. He could eat pizza everyday and be the happiest guy in the world!
